Fall in Chittenden County

It’s known as the most beautiful time of year in Vermont, when the Green Mountains turn into varieties of stunning yellow, orange and red, as if the trees themselves have become fireworks…

WhenVermont Slows Down and Shows Off

I'm an eighth-generation Vermonter, and I still stop the car in October.

Chittenden County, Vermont’s most populous region with a whopping 169,000+ residents, gives you the foliage, the farm stands, and the lake in a single afternoon, all within a short drive of home. Whether you've lived here your whole life or you're thinking about moving here, fall is the season to see it at its best (and a great time to list your home!).

This time of year, the air gets as crisp as a freshly-plucked apple.

The Lake Is the Secret Ingredient

Lake Champlain softens the light in fall. Sunsets from the Burlington waterfront or the Colchester Causeway turn the Adirondacks across the water into a layered silhouette. If you only do one thing this season, watch the sun go down from the lakeshore. Enjoy a picnic with some cider and make a memory that will last a lifetime.

Get Out on the Trails

Vermont’s hiking is some of the best in the world. Here are some great snickets to take in the foliage:

  • Mt. Philo (Charlotte): a short climb with a big payoff over the lake and the valley.

  • Camel's Hump (Huntington): a full-day commitment, and the iconic Vermont summit view.

  • Intervale Center (Burlington): flat, easy walking among working farms, good for families.

Eat Your Way Through the Season

Cider donuts, apple picking, pumpkins, and farmstand squash are everywhere in the county. The Burlington Farmers Market is at its best in fall, with harvest produce, cheese, and baked goods. Go early, bring a bag, and skip the plan.

Visit one of the many apple orchards and pick your own, bring them home and bake a home made pie or crumble! A wonderful Autumn tradition that many local families enjoy.

Towns Worth a Slow Sunday

  • Burlington: Church Street, the waterfront, and the South End arts district.

  • Winooski: walkable, with independent shops and restaurants around the roundabout. It's also where my wife Ruth and I run Dwellness, so stop in and say hello.

  • Shelburne: Shelburne Farms is as classic as Vermont gets in fall.

  • Richmond and Jericho: quieter villages with mountain backdrops.

Why Fall Is Also the Best Time to Think About Home

Fall is when people figure out what they want from where they live. Wood stoves, mudrooms, and a kitchen big enough for a crowd start to matter. The county offers real range:

  • Walkable and urban: Burlington and Winooski

  • Suburban comfort: South Burlington, Essex, and Williston

  • Rural acreage: Hinesburg, Huntington, and Charlotte

If you're relocating, a fall visit is the easiest way to feel which one fits. Everything looks its best, and you'll see how each town handles the season before winter arrives. If you already live here, it's a good moment to ask whether your home still matches the way you live.
